Type Concept: This association is currently described only from Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. It is known from a small area on the western subalpine zone of Mauna Loa. Elevations range from approximately 2200-2350 m. This association is characterized by open woodland canopies of Sophora chrysophylla ranging from 10-20% cover. Myoporum sandwicense may occasionally codominate. The understory is composed of mostly herbaceous vegetation dominated by the non-native Ehrharta stipoides, which ranges from 20-40% cover. No other species was observed to have high constancy or cover. Average species richness is 13 species per plot.
