Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Western Pacific Mangrove Group
Colloquial Name: Western Pacific Mangrove
Hierarchy Level: Group
Type Concept: Mangrove forests are common along estuaries, deltas, quiet bays, coastal mudflats, and on some offshore islets. Large swamps occur in Micronesia around Belau, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. Well-developed stands may be 15 to 20 m in height. The dominant species include Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. Other species include Lumnitzera litorea, Avicennia marina, Xylocarpus granatum, Xylocarpus moluccensis, Scyphiphora hydrophylalacea, and Excoecaria agallocha. On the seaward side of the forest, Sonneratia alba and Rhizophora mucronata are dominant. Native species richness declines in Micronesian mangroves extending east and north of Belau.
