CEGL005997 Artemisia arbuscula ssp. longiloba / Poa fendleriana Shrubland

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Alkali Sagebrush / Muttongrass Shrubland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This alkali sagebrush low shrubland is only known from Fossil Butte National Monument in southwestern Wyoming. Stands occur on gentle to steep (2-24°), west-, northwest- or east-facing slopes between 2080 and 2450 m elevation. The unvegetated surface has moderate exposure of bare soil, moderate cover of litter, and low cover of small and large rocks. Soils are well-drained to rapidly drained clay loams or clays derived from the Wasatch Formation. This association is characterized by a sparse to moderate the short-shrub layer dominated by Artemisia arbuscula ssp. longiloba (1-20% cover) and the perennial bunchgrass Poa fendleriana (1-15% cover) that dominates the understory. This association includes sparsely vegetated stands as total vegetation cover ranges from 2-43%. The shrub layer includes other the short and dwarf-shrubs, such as Artemisia tripartita, Atriplex confertifolia, Cercocarpus montanus, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, and Ericameria nauseosa, that provide sparse cover. The typically sparse herbaceous layer includes other grasses, including Elymus lanceolatus, Poa secunda, Poa secunda, and Pseudoroegneria spicata, and forbs such as Astragalus jejunus, Astragalus vexilliflexus, Eriogonum brevicaule, Phlox hoodii, Phlox longifolia, and Trifolium gymnocarpon.
