Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: California Live Oak / Toyon Woodland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This woodland association occurs on somewhat steep to steep slopes with variable or north-facing aspects at elevations between 87 and 658 m. It is dominated by Quercus agrifolia in the tree layer, Heteromeles arbutifolia in the understory shrub layer, and a variety of grasses and forbs in the herbaceous layer.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: Allen et al. (1991) have identified two associations of coast live oak with toyon: One with the shrub Toxicodendron diversilobum, and one with grass species in the understory. It is likely that the currently defined association herein is most similar to the one with Toxicodendron diversilobum. Although only 50% of the samples had Toxicodendron diversilobum, the other environmental characteristics suggest a congruence of this and these two type. Since both accounts do not completely detail the herbaceous component of stands, it remains for a more detailed study to reveal whether these two associations can be reduced to synonymy.

Floristics: Vegetation is dominated by Quercus agrifolia in the tree layer, Heteromeles arbutifolia in the understory shrub layer, and a variety of grasses and forbs in the herbaceous layer. Average cover reported by Allen et al. (1991) for the similar Quercus agrifolia / Heteromeles arbutifolia - Toxicodendron diversilobum association is 89% tree cover and about 10% Heteromeles arbutifolia and Toxicodendron diversilobum cover. A number of woody and herbaceous species occur at less than 15% constancy.

Dynamics:  No Data Available

Environmental Description:  This association typically occurs on moderate to steep north- to northeast-facing slopes. The soils are mostly loams over hard sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and shale.

Geographic Range: Similar associations are know from much of central and southern coastal California, as far north as Napa and as far south as Los Angeles counties.
