Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This sandsheet association occurs in the Colorado Plateau and was sampled in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in southern Utah and northern Arizona. This open shrubland is dominated by Ephedra cutleri, with 4-25% cover. Stands tend to be homogenous, though occasionally Coleogyne ramosissima, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Opuntia phaeacantha, Vanclevea stylosa, and Yucca angustissima may be present with sparse to low cover. The understory is typically poorly developed with weedy species such as Bromus tectorum, Grindelia fastigiata, and Salsola tragus. Stands occur on gently sloping hills, sideslopes, and mesatops at elevations ranging from 1112 to 1599 m. Sand and bare soil cover most of the unvegetated surface, with lesser cover by litter and gravel. Soils are rapidly drained sands and loamy sands derived from Dakota or Navajo sandstones or from eolian deposits.
