Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Black Grama Coconino Plateau Shrub Grassland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This shrub herbaceous association is currently only known from Wupatki National Monument in Arizona, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Elevation ranges from 1450-1770 m (4757-5807 feet). The substrate consists mainly of limestone cobbles, gravel, and bedrock with black cinders and clay loam soils. A few examples are also characterized by sand and sandstone. The slope varies from gentle to steep (0-20%). Total vegetation cover ranges from 21-46%. The total species diversity ranges from 4-16 species in the 21 sampled plots. The shrub layer is not dominated by a single species; rather, several species characteristic of the Colorado Plateau can dominate or codominate in the shrub canopy depending on abiotic factors and land-use history. These shrubs include Atriplex confertifolia, Atriplex canescens, Ephedra viridis, Ericameria nauseosa , and Gutierrezia sarothrae. The herbaceous layer is dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda.
