CEGL005807 Juniperus monosperma Cinder Open Scrub Rock Vegetation
Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available
Common (Translated Scientific) Name: One-seed Juniper Cinder Open Scrub Rock Vegetation
Colloquial Name: No Data Available
Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This wooded herbaceous association is currently only known from Wupatki National Monument in Arizona, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Elevation ranges from 1635-1755 m (5364-5758 feet). Slope is minimal to flat ranging from 0-5%. The substrate always consists of black cinder, with sporadic occurrence of basaltic boulders and sandstone. The cinder depth is site-specific and varies depending on the geologic history of the site. Some sites have a thin layer of surface cinders and others have more than 2 m (7 feet) cinder depth. Total vegetation cover ranges from 7-48%. Although the association is considered to be herbaceous, herbaceous cover is often low. Varying depth of cinder causes broad-scale patchiness of the grass species. The total species diversity ranges from 3-12 species within 27 sampled plots. The shrub layer is dominated by sparse Juniperus monosperma. Bouteloua eriopoda and Pleuraphis jamesii occur frequently in the herbaceous layer; however, they do not need to be present.
