CEGL004506 Quercus hemisphaerica - Carya glabra - (Quercus virginiana) Forest
Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available
Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Darlington Oak - Pignut Hickory - (Live Oak) Forest
Colloquial Name: Northern Gulf Xeric Hammock
Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This is a poorly understood and documented hardwood association found in the outer portions of the East Gulf Coastal Plain. It is best known in Florida where examples are dominated by Quercus nigra, Magnolia grandiflora, Carya glabra, and Quercus hemisphaerica, with Quercus hemisphaerica usually dominant, but is also found rarely in Mississippi and possibly in Alabama. Related hardwood forests or hammocks of the region with Quercus geminata are covered by another association. This community occurs on dry upper slopes with reduced fire frequencies. More information is needed on the floristic composition of this type.

Floristics: In Florida, stands of this type are dominated by Quercus nigra, Magnolia grandiflora, Carya glabra, and Quercus hemisphaerica, with Quercus hemisphaerica usually dominant (A. Johnson pers. comm.). Persea borbonia and Ilex opaca may also be present in the understory. The extent to which Quercus virginiana is present or diagnostic of this type is not clear. More detailed information is needed on the floristic composition of this type both in Florida and throughout its range.
Dynamics: Fire likely maintained the ecotonal position of this community under natural conditions. With fire suppression and reduced fire frequency this type may expand into formerly more open sandhills.
Environmental Description: This type forms an ecotone between mesic hardwood forests and sandhills on dry upper slopes in the panhandle of north Florida (A. Johnson pers. comm.).
Geographic Range: These dry-mesic to xeric hammocks range from northern Florida and southern Alabama to southern Mississippi.
