CEGL001674 Pseudoroegneria spicata - Achnatherum hymenoides Grassland

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Bluebunch Wheatgrass - Indian Ricegrass Grassland

Colloquial Name: Bluebunch Wheatgrass - Indian Ricegrass Mixedgrass Prairie

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This sparse grassland association has been described from western Colorado, south-central Wyoming, and southwestern Montana. Stands occupy rocky or badland slopes with shallow, usually unstable soils. Common species in the sparse vegetation are Pseudoroegneria spicata (which generally dominates) and Achnatherum hymenoides. Among the other species which may be present, usually in small amounts, are Gutierrezia sarothrae, Aristida purpurea var. longiseta, Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis, Phlox spp., Artemisia frigida, and Chrysothamnus spp.

Diagnostic Characteristics: No Data Available

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: This association has been described in some detail from western Colorado (with data from 3 plots). In Montana, the vegetation often is sparse (only about 10% canopy cover), and Phlox hoodii may contribute more canopy cover than do any of the grasses. The stands in Wyoming have been described only vaguely, and they seem to occur on different substrates (fine-textured badland slopes, as opposed to rocky slopes). More detailed information is needed from the Wyoming stands. The differences between this association and other Pseudoroegneria spicata-dominated types should also be analyzed carefully.

Among the other species which may be present, usually in small amounts, are Gutierrezia sarothrae, Aristida purpurea var. longiseta (= Aristida longiseta), Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis, Phlox spp., Artemisia frigida, and Chrysothamnus spp.
