Type Concept: Stands of this woodland are found in central California at low elevations (92-1220 m [300-4000 feet]) on all aspects, primarily on middle to upper slopes with less than 35% steepness, but occasionally found on flat areas. Soil textures range from gravel to clay loam to silt loam from various parent materials. The association is dominated by Quercus douglasii in the overstory tree layer and often contains other abundant or characteristic tree species at lower cover, such as Pinus sabiniana. The understory shrub layer includes Lonicera subspicata var. denudata, Lonicera hispidula var. vacillans, Ceanothus cuneatus, Rhamnus crocea, and Rhamnus ilicifolia.

Most of the tree species in this association have a dbh between 10 and 28 cm (4-11 inches), and some of the tree species have a dbh of 30 to 58 cm (12-23 inches) (Allen et al. 1991).
