Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Apache Plume - (Fourwing Saltbush, Torrey''s Joint-fir) Cinder Shrubland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This Apache plume shrubland association is currently only known from Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. Elevation ranges from 1360-1850 m (4462-6070 feet) at Wupatki and from 2130-2440 m at Sunset Crater. This association occurs on flat land to steep hillslopes from 0-50% slope. It sometimes occurs within washes or sheetflow areas, and is found on red and black cinder. Total vegetation cover ranges from 6-40% (average 20%). The tree layer is very sparse with scattered Pinus ponderosa and Pinus edulis. The shrub layer ranges from 3-27% cover, and herbaceous layer is 1-17%. The total species diversity ranges from 3-24 species. The shrub layer is the most defining stratum and is dominated by Fallugia paradoxa. Atriplex canescens and Ephedra torreyana are also often consistent species within this association. Other shrub species such as Ericameria nauseosa may dominate this association as smaller patches within larger Fallugia paradoxa matrix. The herbaceous layer is low to moderate in cover with no consistent species.
