Type Concept: This cold, dry, montane woodland association occurs at elevations from 2040 to 2150 m (6700-7050 feet). Stands occur on very cold sites on upper slopes on northern aspects. The tree canopy is codominated by Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii and contains Pinus albicaulis and Pinus contorta in the canopy. The shrub layer is patchy but dense and codominated by Phyllodoce empetriformis and Vaccinium scoparium. Herbaceous species are rare to absent. Lichens are common. This association occurs in the eastern North Cascades and isolated high peaks in the Okanogan Highlands in Washington and adjacent British Columbia.
