Herbs and shrubs are sparse, but may include Piptochaetium fimbriatum, Lonicera albiflora, Holodiscus discolor, Carex geophila, Bromus anomalus, Amelanchier utahensis and Mahonia repens. In grassy openings, typical species include Muhlenbergia dubia, Koeleria macrantha, Festuca arizonica, and Bouteloua curtipendula. It intergrades with various woodlands, including Pinus ponderosa-dominated woodlands.
