These woodlands are found at low elevations (averaging 683 m [2240 feet]), on stony, gravelly serpentine or peridotite soils. The soils are typical, red serpentine clays. Aspects and slopes are variable. This is a woodland, dominated by Pinus jeffreyi, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Pinus attenuata. The shrub cover is moderate and variable, with Umbellularia californica forming a tall-shrub layer, and Quercus vacciniifolia, Arctostaphylos nevadensis, Frangula californica at about 1 m tall, and Ceanothus pumilus as an evergreen shrub ground cover. Forbs are generally present, with Carex spp., Zigadenus micranthus, Aspidotis densa, Galium ambiguum, Lomatium macrocarpum, and Achillea millefolium found in most stands.
