Type Concept: On White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, this minor type is known from the southern Jornada del Muerto basin at 1450 m (4760 feet) elevation and is characterized by patches of abundant Pleuraphis mutica and well-represented Scleropogon brevifolius. Bare soil patches are often conspicuous. Pleuraphis mutica is abundant and dominant relative to Scleropogon brevifolius. Shrubs are insignificant, and forb diversity is low (six species). The abundance of Scleropogon brevifolius may attest to past disturbance impacts. This type occurs commonly throughout the Southwest and northern Mexico on open rangelands.
