This association occurs specifically on cinder dunes or hummocks with cinder substrate. Total vegetation cover ranges from 20-25% in the shrub and herbaceous layers. The total species diversity ranges from 6-9 species within sampled plots. The shrub layer is dominated by Ephedra torreyana. However, Fallugia paradoxa may dominate or codominate in some areas.
