CEGL001788 Eriogonum strictum / Poa secunda Dwarf-shrub Grassland

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Blue Mountain Buckwheat / Sandberg Bluegrass Dwarf-shrub Grassland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This association is a depauperate scabland. Stands occur on rocky, barely vegetated sites on the Wallowa Valley Ranger District of northeastern Oregon and in Idaho. This vegetation may also occur in California. Sites are found at elevations of 1280-1555 m (4200-5100 feet) upon upper slopes and ridgelines with southwest aspects and an average slope of 18%. Soils are shallow loess deposits over basalt. Eriogonum strictum dominates this sparse vegetation with only 14% cover. Poa secunda, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Sedum stenopetalum and Sedum lanceolatum are the most common associated species with respective cover of 1-15%, 0-10%, 0-3%, 0-3%. The successional status of this type is not clear, since Eriogonum strictum is not impacted by grazing, while the native bunchgrasses are.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: This is similar to types described from Washington by Daubenmire (1970). Plot data will better help to analyze the Eriogonum spp. - Poa secunda types on a regional basis.
