CEGL000031 Abies lowiana - Abies magnifica var. shastensis / Ribes spp. Forest

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Sierra White Fir - Shasta Red Fir / Currant species Forest

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This community is common in the Klamath-Siskiyou Region of Oregon and probably also occurs in California and in the southern Cascades. Stands are usually on convex topography at mid-slopes and are found at elevations of 1160-1680 m (3800-5500 feet) on all but northern aspects. This mixed-conifer forest association has a lush understory. Abies lowiana usually dominates the tree canopy with lesser cover of Abies magnifica var. shastensis, Calocedrus decurrens, and Pseudotsuga menziesii. Typical understory plants include Ribes spp., Osmorhiza purpurea, Actaea rubra, and Melica subulata.

Diagnostic Characteristics: No Data Available

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: Only seven plots inventoried. The Ribes species are not identified in the literature. Atzet et al. (1996) re-classified this association as Abies concolor - Abies magnifica var. shastensis / Achlys triphylla, which is probably a better name.
