Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Alkali Sagebrush / Bluebunch Wheatgrass Shrub Grassland

								Colloquial Name: No Data Available

								Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This alkali sagebrush / bluebunch wheatgrass shrub herbaceous vegetation is known from Fossil Butte National Monument and Gros Ventre Range in western Wyoming and south into North Park, Colorado. Stands occur on flats, buttes and ridges. The sites are flat to steep (up to 21° slopes) and occur between 2100 and 2440 m (7000-8000 feet) elevation. The unvegetated surface has low to moderate exposure of bare soil, moderate cover of small rocks, and low cover of large rocks, litter, and downed wood. Soils are well-drained to poorly drained (clay pan) and fine-textured. Vegetation is characterized by a sparse to open shrub canopy dominated by Artemisia arbuscula ssp. longiloba with the understory dominated by Pseudoroegneria spicata with up to 15% cover. Associated shrubs include low cover of Atriplex confertifolia, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Krascheninnikovia lanata, Eriogonum microthecum, Artemisia frigida, and Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana. The remaining herbaceous layer is moderately diverse and contributes sparse to low cover. Common species include Achillea millefolium, Astragalus jejunus, Crepis intermedia, Elymus elymoides, Eriogonum spp., Phlox hoodii, Poa secunda, and Stenotus acaulis.

Environmental Description:  This shrub herbaceous vegetation is known from Fossil Butte National Monument and Gros Ventre Range in western Wyoming and south into North Park, Colorado. Stands occur on flats, buttes and ridges. The sites are flat to steep (up to 21° slopes), occur between 2100 and 2440 m (7000-8000 feet) elevation, and are oriented to the north, west, or southeast. The unvegetated surface has low to moderate exposure of bare soil, moderate cover of small rocks, and low cover of large rocks, litter, and downed wood. Substrates are often shallow, well-drained to poorly drained (clay pan), fine-textured soils derived from the Wasatch Formation or Coalmont Formation shales.

Geographic Range: This association occurs in Fossil Butte National Monument and Gros Ventre Range in western Wyoming, in North Park, Colorado, and is likely more widespread in the intermountain western U.S.
