Biography

Dr. Kahara joined the California unit in 2007 as a post-doctoral research associate and has been lecturing in the Department of Wildlife, Humboldt State University, since 2009. Sharon was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. She reads, paints and observes wildlife in her spare time. Sharon once worked as a cartoon animator and graphic designer.. My research interests involve integrating multiple spatial and temporal scales into wetland ecosystem models, and exploring how they may be used to test hypotheses relating to use by waterfowl and other wetland fauna. My goal is to enhance our current understanding of how variable climate conditions and human activities shape waterfowl breeding, migration and wintering habitat through direct and indirect impacts on plant growth and aquatic macroinvertebrate population dynamics. I'm also interested in the use of earth observation (remote sensing) techniques to monitor changes in wetland functions and ecosystem services provided, and how these may impact associated waterfowl..
