Historically, shorebirds likely by-passed the MAV for the Gulf Coast or exploited limited stopover habitat associated with riverine wetlands on exposed mudflats and sandbars. Shorebird abundances were greatest on sites with shallow water habitat that mimic the practices implemented by the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative. Ponds with shallow water habitat contained shorebird numbers similar to those observed on the Gulf Coast.
