Unit scientists contribute to the curriculum offerings at South Dakota State University by teaching graduate-level courses in fish and wildlife ecology.

Courses Taught

  • Independent Study baseR for Biologists introduces students to concepts on data management and manipulation
    in R, including extracting subsets of data, data splitting, data control structures, merging and
    combining data, sorting, ranking and ordering data and looping data in R. The course also
    introduces basics of graph construction in R, including scatter plots, line plots, bar charts,
    and histograms. The on-line course was developed by Dr. Thomas Edwards, USGS, Utah
    Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit.

  • Independent Study This course introduces students to concepts and fundamentals of fish physiology. The course covers a diverse range of physiological adaptations that fishes use to cope with environmental conditions. The course is free for graduate students. Students will sign up for Independent study at their home University. This class will be open September 3, 2019. The class is capped at 30 participants on a first come-first serve basis.   • Wildlife Research Design This course will provide students with exposure to the philosophy of science and critical thinking, important foundational work regarding wildlife study design and implementation, and an understanding of basic statistical tools and techniques that may be useful in their own research.   • Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) (Steve Chipps June 2019)
  • This workshop provided a 1.5 hour presentation of the results of a survey of South Dakota landowners to South Dakota GFP staff and a 1.5 hour discussion of the implications and use of the information. (Larry Gigliotti March 2019)
