This project involved the following steps: 1) Previous vegetation literature and reports on Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve were researched, species data was collected, and documents associated with community classification were gathered. 2) The most current and least pixilated aerial imagery was acquired and the validity of the image was taken with an accuracy assessment of ground control points. 3) Draft vegetation polygons were drawn based on photo interpretation of the aerial imagery. 4) Vegetation plots were selected based on draft polygons and field sheets, a species list, and a vegetation species photo guide were created for field use. 5) Pre-selected vegetation plots were visited, as well as additional plots selected while in the field, and significant vegetation data was recorded at each vegetation plot. 6) A database was designed based on data collected at each vegetation plot, with all data from field sheets being inputted accordingly. 7) A vegetation classification system was created based on vegetation physiognomic class, Caribbean Formations from Areces-Mallea et al. (1999), U.S. Virgin Islands Sub-formations from Gibney et al. (2000), and Alliances/Associations defined by the SFCN based on data from vegetation plots and field notes. 8) The final stages of this vegetation map consisted of redrawing the vegetation polygons using data accumulated throughout this project, and running ESRI ArcMap to check the spatial topology of the vegetation polygons. 20090401 Kevin Whelan, Ph.D. National Park Service - South Florida/Caribbean Network mailing and physical address
