    <descript>
The Petrified Forest National Park Vegetation Map Database was developed as a primary product in the Petrified Forest National Park Vegetation Classification, Distribution, and Mapping project. The map database maps vegetation at four levels of thematic organization at the park: the base, group, macro-group, and management map classes. Most of the base map classes represent plant communities identified to National Vegetation Classification associations. The associated report, Vegetation Classification and Distribution Mapping Report: Petrified Forest National Park, describes in detail the methods used to develop the map database and map classes. The project was sponsored by the USA-National Vegetation Mapping Program and the National Park Service (NPS) Southern Colorado Plateau Network and the work was executed by a multi-agency and organizational team. The vegetation map database covers the park and an approximately 1 kilometer buffer around the park boundary.
      <purpose>The vegetation map database is developed to provide current vegetation description and distribution information to Petrified Forest National Park management, the NPS Southern Colorado Plateau Network, and interested resource managers and scientists. This spatial information can be used for management, planning, monitoring, and comparison of the park's vegetation resources to regional vegetation.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Base map units were initially delineated on transparent polyester sheets using photointerpretation of 1:6000 true color aerial photography. These map units were transferred to digital format using digital ortho-photoquadrangles to geographically register the map units. Existing vegetation field data from 1996 (186 releves), new field data collected for this project (149 releves), and observations made in the field during photointerpretation were used to identify plant communities (alliances, associations and park specials) that were assigned to base map classes. Forty-six base map classes were defined and each polygon was labeled with a base map class. Six hundred thirty field-collected accuracy assessment observations were used to determine the base map class accuracy. Group map classes (15 total) were formed through combinations of base map classes so as to represent the group level of version 2 of the National Vegetation Classification Standard. Management map classes (24 total) were also formed from base map classes. In this case, they represented aggregations of base map classes that preserved map accuracy and maintained base map classes of importance to park managers. An additional midlevel grouping in the NVCS version 2, one level above the group, was used to create 13 macro-group map classes. The field collected accuracy assessment data was used to also determine the accuracy of the group, management, and macro-group map classes.</procdesc>
