<abstract>
Vegetation at HUTR was mapped and classified by a combination of plot data, field visits and photo interpretation. Aerial photographs from September 14th, 2003 were used during the photo interpretation process. Field data used to aid in the assignment of map labels was collected in August of 2006. The protocols and standards used are those for small parks and are described in the NPS/BRD program documents (National Mapping Program Field Methods for Vegetation Mapping (1994a) for small parks (section 5.1). BOR was contracted by the Southern Colorado Plateau Network in 2005 to map approximately 1,639 acres (~ 663 ha) of Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site and environs.

Vegetation mapping for HUTR encompassed both the executive boundary of HUTR and a variable distance (0.8 - 1.0 km) environ buffer. The vegetation map is a 1:24000-scale product.

<procdesc>
Photo Interpretation:

Photo interpretation was done direclty on the aerial photographs. Heads up digitizing was then used to transfer all polygons onto a 1988 USGS DOQ. No attempt was made at the initial photo interpetation stage to label polygons. Polygons were delineated using homogenous ground features as a mapable unit. These drawn polygons were later revisited after collection of field data to then assign a map unit and other polygon attributes.

Map Units and Polygon Attribution:

The map units delineated on the images were derived from the NVC and discussions with the Park staff. A preliminary list of potential vegetation types was developed by NatureServe. Additional data and information was gleaned from field visits and incorporated into the final list of map units. Because of the small size of the Park and the large amount of field data the map units are equivalent to existing vegetation associations or local associations / descriptions.
