    <descript>
High resolution vegetation polygons mapped by the National Park Service. The Center for Remote Sensing and Mapping Science (CRMS), Department of Geography at The University of Georgia and the National Park Service (NPS) developed a seamless and complete GIS vegetation database of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM). Photo interpretation of 1:12,000 scale color infrared (CIR) aerial photographs from 1997-1998, GPS-assisted field observations and the hierarchical GRSM Vegetation Classification System containing over 150 over story and under story classes (CRMS interpreters' class fields) were used to create the vegetation database. These data were used to produce associated 1:15,000-scale hardcopy maps keyed to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5-minute quadrangles. Where possible CRMS interpreters' classes were later statified into associations of NatureServe's National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS), the standard classification units for NPS vegetation maps. A thematic accuracy assessment was completed for this map in February 2007. Based upon this assessment, NVCS classes were combined and new classes were added to achieve an overall attribute accuracy (across all GRSM_code classes) of 80.4% (Kappa Index = 80.0).
      <purpose>Vegetation maps of National Parks and National Monuments were developed to support natural resources management, planning, research and interpretation.</purpose>
      <supplinf>Data were imported to a file geodatabase by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program/Colorado State University. Parks had the flexibility to map vegetation down to the map class or to the association. Refer to grsmaarpt.pdf and grsmrpt.pdf for more detailed information.</supplinf>
