<procdesc>Plots were distributed in such a way as to maximize the coverage of as many habitats as possible but within the logistical constraints of the parks rugged terrain and wilderness areas. Using available aerial photography and satellite imagery, sampling zones representing typical vegetation patterns of a given area were identified that were reasonably accessible by roads and trails and within a days hike of water. Since geology plays a key role in the pattern of vegetation communities, samplings were distributed among as many geologic units as possible to ensure broad coverage of different landscape types. Plots were most commonly located in landscape clusters whereby plots would be optimally distributed in such a way as to represent the local vegetation pattern and geomorphic configuration.

Following the standards and procedures of the National Mapping Program, 328 validation plots were collected in summer of 2006 distributed proportionally across map units by area.</procdesc>
