<descript>
The dataset consists of mosaiced aerial photography for the Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona.
<purpose>The aerial photographs were photo-interpreted to produce a vegetation cover map of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument. This mosaic of orthorectified photography will be used for reference in a GIS.</purpose>

<procdesc>Aerial photos were scanned into 1-bit (bi-level) raw tiffs at 400 dpi. Scanned photos were orthorectified using Orthomapper software with existing 10-m DEM and 1-m DOQQ files for registration. Root mean square (RMS) error was targeted at 2.0 m or less in each direction with a maximum error of 4.0 m for any single registration point. Where possible 12 points were used for rectification to allow for a second order transformation.</procdesc>

<procdesc>ERDAS Imagine 2010 Version 10.0 Build 510 was used to perform the mosaic. Each aerial photo image was displayed and an area of interest was digitized to exclude the border and fiducials. The mosaic tool was used to mosaic the aerial photos together by flightline: 2103 (west), 2703 (middle), and 3003 (east). Each flightline was mosaicked independently using approximately alternating aerial photos. For each flightline the best mosaic resulted from the following options: 1) color correction - no color correction, 2) overlap function - overlapping aerial photos, and 3) output option union of all inputs and clipping to the 1-mile buffered boundary for the national monument. The three flightline mosaics were then mosaicked using the following options: 1) color correction histogram matching with the matching method being overlap areas and histogram type being band by band, 2) overlap function overlay, and 3) output option union of all inputs.</procdesc>
