The Canyon de Chelly National Monument Classification Releve Location executable shapefile (cachplot.exe) was developed as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) product to represent the location of classification releves measured in the vegetation and mapping project conducted at Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Its spatial extent covers Canyon de Chelly National Monument and an approximate 1 kilometer buffer around the park boundary (park environs).
<purpose>The executable shapefile (cachplot.exe) maps sites where classification releve observations were made for the vegetation mapping project conducted at Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Original field data is documented in cachdata.mdb.</purpose>

<procdesc>Field observers recorded the geographic coordinates of classification releves established in the field. These coordinates were entered into an Access database and imported into GIS to develop the classification releve shapefile.

To allocate releves, the park landscape was stratified into unique biophysical types. The biophysical types were created by layering spatial data for landscape position, geology, stream buffer, slope, and aspect in a GIS environment and identifying each unique combination as one type. The number of polygons targeted for sampling within each biophysical type was proportional to the total area and frequency of occurrence of that type within the park. More information on field sampling methodology appears in Section 2.1.1.2 of the report.</procdesc>
