This is a vector polygon file showing the boundary of Bryce Canyon National Park. The coordinates for this dataset were heads up digitized at a scale of 1:24,000 off of a USGS 7.5 minute DRG using ArcView 3.2.
<purpose>To show the location of the boundary of Bryce Canyon National Park. The intended use of all data in the park's GIS library is to support diverse park activities including planning, management, maintenance, research, and interpretation.</purpose>
<supplinf>At Bryce Canyon National Park faulting and erosion shaped colorful Claron limestones, sandstones, and mudstones into thousands of spires, fins, pinnacles, and mazes. Collectively called "hoodoos," these colorful and whimsical formations stand in horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters along the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in Southern Utah.

Bryce Canyon National Park was proclaimed a national monument June 8, 1923. June 7, 1924 it was renamed and redesignated Utah National Park. February 25, 1928 it was renamed to its present day title "Bryce Canyon National Park".

Bryce Canyon National Park is named for pioneer Ebenezer Bryce who came to the area in 1875. He was sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to settle this area. Bryce built a road to the plateau top to retrieve firewood and timber. Local people called the canyon with the strange rock formations near Ebenezer's home "Bryce's Canyon".</supplinf>
