This is a polyline vector file showing the a graphical representation of the park boundary of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site adjusted to coincide with the existing western fenceline. Dataset includes a roughtly sketched line on the western side of the park to coincide with the GPSed fence data representing the western extent of the park. Information for most of the park boundary comes from the distributed National Park Service boundary file created and maintained by Dean Tucker.
<purpose>Illustrate the boundary of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site. The intended use of all data in the park's GIS library is to support diverse park activities including planning, management, maintenance, research, and interpretation.</purpose>
<supplinf>William and Charles Bent, along with Ceran St. Vrain, built the original fort on this site in 1833 to trade with plains Indians and trappers. The adobe fort quickly became the center of the Bent, St.Vrain Company's expanding trade empire that included Fort St.Vrain to the north and Fort Adobe to the south, along with company stores in Mexico at Taos and Santa Fe. The primary trade was with the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians for buffalo robes. For much of its 16-year history, the fort was the only major permanent Caucasian settlement on the Santa Fe Trail between Missouri and the Mexican settlements. The fort provided explorers, adventurers, and the U.S. Army a place to get needed supplies, wagon repairs, livestock, food, water, rest and protection in this vast "Great American Desert." During the war with Mexico in 1846, the fort became a staging area for Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny's "Army of the West". Disasters and disease caused the fort's abandonment in 1849. Archeological excavations and original sketches, paintings and diaries were used in the fort's reconstruction in 1976. The shapefile was imported into a geodatabase by the USGS/CSS/Core Science Analytics and Synthesis.</supplinf>

<logic>There are no duplicate features present. Topology does not exist in this file because it is a shapefile.</logic>
<complete>This dataset is complete but possibly incorrect. The western extent north of the intersection of the park with HWY 194 does not align with the newly roughed in western boundary south of the highway. The BLM resurveyed the western boundary in 2000, but have not processed the data into a useful GIS dataset. Once the BLM data is available, the western boundary needs to be updated.</complete>
<posacc>
<horizpa>
<horizpar>The horizontal accuracy for most of the boundary is unknown. The western portion south of Highway 194 was headsup digitized to roughly match to the fence GPSed north of the Arkansas River. The remaining portion of the boundary dataset appears to overaly fairly well with other data in the same cooridnate system and extent.</horizpar>
