Vegetation at AZRU was mapped and classified by a combination of plot data field visits and photointerpretation. The protocols and standards used are those for small parks and are described in the NPS/BRD program documents (National Mapping Program Field Methods for Vegetation Mapping (1994a) for small parks (section 5.1). BOR was contracted by the Southern Colorado Plateau Network in 2005 to map approximately 1,230 acres (~ 500 ha) of Aztec Ruins National Monument and environs.

Vegetation mapping for AZRU encompassed both the executive boundary of AZRU and a 0.5 km environ buffer.

        <procdesc>Photo Interpretation

Photo interpretation was done direclty on the color image using heads-up digitizing. No attempt was made at the initial photo interpetation stage to label polygons. Polygons were delineated using homogenous ground features as a mapable unit. These drawn polygons were later revisited after collection of field data to then assign a map unit and other polygon attributes.

Map Units and Polygon Attribution

The map units delineated on the images were derived from the NVC and discussions with the Park staff. A preliminary list of potential vegetation types was developed by NatureServe. Additional data and information was gleaned from field visits and incorporated into the final list of map units. Because of the small size of the Park and the large amount of field data the map units are equivalent to existing vegetation associations or local associations / descriptions.</procdesc>
