The U.S. Geological Survey has built a framework to compile the Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) from the State Wildlife Action Plans submitted by each state and territory in the United States. The process includes coordinating with the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and individual state agencies to compile species lists from the State Wildlife Action Plans, consulting with taxonomic authorities to organize species names consistently across the U.S., and verifying results with state agency representatives. What results is a list of species for each state that allows comparisons and summaries among states to occur.
